Diary Entry #5 | Black Lives Matter

Well June started pretty horribly, didn't it? There has been - virtually - nothing but coverage of the protests on social media for days now. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining at all, but it's just so awful that even now, people are being wrongfully killed because of their skin colour.

I just don't understand where the hate comes from. Why do some people think they are superior just because of their skin? It's the one thing that has completely baffled me my entire life. It honestly makes me so embarrassed.

I have been incredibly proud though to see the sheer amount of people that I follow across various platforms taking part, speaking up and amplifying black voices. I have been introduced to so many black artists, business people and authors that I potentially may never have found. While I am not one of those people who claim not to "see" skin colour, I don't generally take it into consideration when I'm following people or buying things. If I like something, I like it.

Now though, I'm horrified by how little POC representation I have in my life, how little I have supported them. That is all changing now. I'm going to make a point to teach myself everything there is to know about Black history, find and support all the Black artists, read more books from Black authors, and teach Charlie that racism is not acceptable. I mean, I was planning on teaching him that anyway but I just wanted to make my intentions clear!

One thing I do want to mention is this YouTube video. Zoe Amira created this video to help raise money. It's a huge collection of music and art from various black creators and 100% of the advertisement revenue goes towards bail funds, funerals and other causes. It's a brilliant way for those without the funds to donate. I have lost count of how many times I have personally played the video over the last few days. Just remember, don't skip the adverts. Also, there's tons of links to petitions in the description, they take two minutes to sign so please make sure you do!

I'm not posting this for any kind of praise or anything, I just wanted my blog readers to know where I stand on this situation. I am not okay with it. I have never been okay with it. I will no longer be silent about it.

I see you.
I hear you.
I stand with you.

Justice for all.

Until next time,
Saph x
